Outpatient Clinic for People with Developmental Disabilities
For nearly 50 years, the Developmental Disabilities Clinic at Terence Cardinal Cooke Health Care Center has served the special needs of people living with mental retardation and other developmental disabilities.
All individuals are capable of achieving physical, intellectual and emotional growth. The Health Care Center's multilingual staff is committed to helping patients achieve this growth, as well as keeping patients healthy.
Medical Services
The Health Care Center's multilingual healthcare team has particular expertise in caring for patients of all ages with disabilities.
Our Health Care Center provides a well coordinated and a full complement of clinical services, inlcuding psychiatry, speech evaluation and therapy, psychology, social work, physical therapy, occupational therapy, nutritional therapy, dentistry, and sexuality counseling, as well as diagnostic evaluations in medicine. A primary care physician oversees all of the patients' medical and therapeutic care. Services are provided on-site, making them easily accessible for patients and their families.
A patient's initial evaluation includes a psycho-social history and a medical evaluation. The physician, patient and family or guardian carefully discuss diagnosis and review the individualized treatment plan. This treatment plan contains specific developmental goals for the individual and is reassessed and modified as developmental and general health care needs change.

Pharmacy services are available on site. All other services are provided through affiliated specialists.
Therapeutic Services
An individual's treatment plan may include appropriate therapeutic services that benefit him or her physically, emotionally and socially. These include:
Extensive rehabilitative services include orthotics, prosthetics and wheelchair clinics. Comprehensive psychological services include individual, group, family, behavior and play therapy.
Dental Services
On-site dental services specifically oriented to people with developmental disabilities are provided by a caring staff. Dentists are trained to treat patients utilizing oral pre-medication sedation. In addition to routine dental care, patients receive comprehensive restorative, periodontal, endodontic, and prosthetic services.
REFERRAL AND ADMISSION PROCESS
The Developmental Disabilities Clinic provides diagnostic services to individuals suspected of having developmental delay, epilepsy, cerebral palsy, autism, and other neurological impairment. Once a diagnosis is confirmed, the patient is eligible for the Clinic's services throughout his or her lifetime. Referrals can be made from public or private schools, community or government agencies, group homes, hospitals, physicians or family members.
