BRONX, NY, May 14, 2025 — Calvary Hospital announced today that it has been awarded a $5 million, five-year grant from the Mother Cabrini Health Foundation. The grant will enhance nursing excellence, enrich interdisciplinary collaboration, and advance patient and family care at Calvary, the leading provider of acute palliative and end-of-life care throughout Greater New York.
Calvary is one of 13 New York hospitals selected through a competitive process to receive funding, totaling $51 million in awards. The grant is part of the Foundation’s investment to help each hospital achieve industry-leading frameworks in nursing excellence, establish innovative programs that support front-line nurses, and assist recent nurse graduates transition into the profession.
“We are extremely grateful to The Mother Cabrini Health Foundation for supporting and believing in Calvary’s 125-year-old mission of compassionate, dignified care,” said Calvary President, Michael J. Fosina, FACHE.
The Mother Cabrini Health Foundation’s Nursing Initiative will enable Calvary to participate in the American Nurses Association Credentialing Center’s Pathway to Excellence (PTE) program. Participating in the PTE program will help Calvary further strengthen patient care and collaboration among healthcare team members, and attract top talent to palliative, hospice, and end-of-life care services.
The Foundation’s support will help Calvary enrich and strengthen an intentionally positive practice environment where nurses are empowered, engaged, and supported to excel in their roles,” said Linda Valentino, DNP, RN, NEA-BC, Chief Nursing Officer, Calvary Hospital.
“The Foundation’s investment is transformative. It recognizes that nursing excellence is a driving force for quality, access, innovation, and human-centered care across the healthcare continuum,” added. Dr. Valentino.
Nursing excellence, according to Calvary President, Michael Fosina, is a core Calvary principle:
“Our participation in PTE and the support of The Mother Cabrini Health Foundation enhances Calvary’s professional environment, bolstering our sustained investments in workforce development, nurse education, patient care, and quality. A robust, diverse nursing workforce is essential for meeting the often-complex needs of Calvary’s patients and their families,” Mr. Fosina said.
The Pathway to Excellence program, administered by the American Nurses Association Credentialing Center, recognizes healthcare organizations that foster a supportive and empowering workplace for nurses. It emphasizes shared decision-making, leadership, safety, quality, well-being, and professional development. Achieving this distinction positions Calvary among the nation’s leading healthcare institutions in nursing standards and patient care.
