what to pack for short term rehab

What to pack for short-term rehab after surgery

At ArchCare, we understand that preparing for a short-term rehabilitation stay can be overwhelming. You may stay at our center for 10 to 30 days as you transition from the hospital to your home.

In our years working with short-term rehab after surgery, we have found recovery can be physical, emotional, and deeply personal.

To prepare, pack items that help you feel normal and set the stage for recovery.

Whether you are preparing for rehab at one of our facilities in Manhattan, Staten Island, or Rhinebeck, we are here to help. This guide is meant to be organized with clear and thoughtful sections so you know what essentials to bring.

First, you need critical documents, like your ID, insurance cards, and medication list. You will save time and feel comforted knowing you have everything ready to go.

Your comfort is a part of your healing process. You want to bring clothes that fit you loosely, like robes and pajamas, or comforting athleisure. You will wish to wear non-slip shoes. You will be moving in therapy daily, doing functional exercises for mobility.

Bring personal needs items like those found in travel kits. Hair brushes, if you prefer specific shampoos or lotions, bring those in small amounts to feel at home.

You can bring a favorite blanket and a photo of your family. Please do not bring candles or items with a strong fragrance. A journal, a prayer book, or a magazine may be helpful to pass the time and stay engaged in things you love.

Be sure to pack efficiently and be considerate of the space you have as a shared healing environment.

Bring any mobility aids your physician or care providers may have provided. This may include adaptive equipment, canes, or braces. Your care team may have provided specific instructions for healing care post-surgery. Common recommendations may be clothing that is easy to put on, with a front opening or slip-ons.
